Audrey Nelson, PhD, RN, FAAN, is the Director of the VISN 8 Patient Safety Center of Inquiry (PSCI). Funded by VAHQ, the center is programmatically aligned with both the VISN 8 Health Systems Committee as well as the National Center for Patient Safety, and is located at the James A. Haley VAMC in Tampa. The center effectively blends clinical and research initiatives to improve patient and caregiver safety, enhance quality of care, and influence policy. The center is entitled "Preventing Adverse Events Associated with Mobility and Immobility". The mission is to support clinicians in providing safe patient care by designing and testing safety defenses for the patient, provider, technology, and organization. Specifically, the goals are to: (1) Promote personal freedom and safety for persons with impaired mobility, targeting two vulnerable veteran populations -- frail elderly and persons with disabilities. (2) Promote safe use of technology to prevent adverse events associated with mobility or immobility. (3) Promote a culture of safety to support clinicians in providing safe patient care and safe working environments. Foci of the center include: (1) Preventing Patient Falls and Fall-Related Injuries [Primary Focus]; (2) Safe Hospital Beds: Bedrail Entrapment and Bed-Related Falls [Secondary Focus]; (3) Safe Patient Handling and Movement [Secondary Focus]; (4) Technology to Prevent Pressure Ulcers in Spinal Cord Impairment (SCI) [New Focus]; (5) Preventing Elopement and Falls Associated with Wandering [New Focus].
