Jeff Harrow, MD, PhD, FACP
Professional Experience: Dr. Harrow is a Clinician/Engineer. On the clinical side, he has worked at the Tampa and Palo Alto Spinal Cord Injury Centers for 10 years. His academic appointment is Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Rehabilitation at the University of South Florida. On the engineering side, he has a 3-year VA Career Development Award in Advancing Technology to prevent adverse events in rehabilitation, focusing on preventing pressure ulcers (bedsores). He works closely with the USF Departments of Electrical and Bioengineering, and is currently supervising graduate students from both departments. He has served as principal investigator or co-investigator on several funded research projects through VA HSR&D and RR&D services and has authored a number of articles. He also serves on the JAH VA Research and Development Committee, and the USF Institutional Review Board.
Educational Background: Dr. Harrow received his BS degree from Caltech in Electrical Engineering in 1970. He entered the combined MD/PhD program of Rice University/Baylor College of Medicine. He finished this with an MD and a MEE, then transferred to University of Utah to complete his PhD work in the area of chemically sensitive transistors. After his research training, he completed a general internship at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, and internal medicine at the University of Utah. He is a Board Certified Specialist in Internal Medicine, and a Board Certified Subspecialist in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine. Dr. Harrow is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Military Background: Dr. Harrow joined the US Army National Guard in 1989. Over the intervening 16 years, he has risen to the rank of Colonel, and has served overseas in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He has served as a commander of a Combat Support Hospital, and currently is the Command Surgeon for the Army Reserve Medical Command.
Research Interests: Dr. Harrow has been involved in multiple projects in the area of preventing pressure ulcers, improved mobility for persons with Spinal Cord Injury, and Multiple Sclerosis.
