Audrey L. Nelson, PhD, RN, FAAN

Education

Dr. Nelson has a BSN from the University of South Florida in 1977, a MN from Emory University of 1980, and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Florida in 1990.

Employment

Dr. Nelson has over 17 years of experience in spinal cord injury nursing. As a Research Scientist at the James A. Haley VAMC in Tampa, Dr. Nelson established a program of research focusing on safety and the enhancement of function in persons with disabilities. Dr. Nelson is Center Director for the VISN 8 Evidence-Based Practice Center as well as the newly funded Biomechanics Research Laboratory at the Tampa VAMC. She is completing two years as Center Director for the successful VISN 8 HSR&D Development Center. Dr. Nelson has joint faculty appointments at the University of South Florida in the Colleges of Nursing and Public Health.

Research

Dr. Nelson is well respected for her expertise in nursing research in spinal cord injury. She has had studies funded from Health Services R&D, Rehabilitation R&D, American SCI Nurses Association, Center for Nursing Research (NSRA), and the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Her research focuses on nursing interventions, biomechanical assessment, and equipment design in spinal cord injury. Dr. Nelson precepts Pre- and Post-Doctoral Fellows in Nursing Research, is a Peer Reviewer for the DVA, R&D, and National Paralyzed Veterans of America, and was a Consultant to the United Nations on “Human Rights and Bioethics in the Development of Life and Health Sciences.”

Professional Involvement

Dr. Nelson is nationally known in SCI nursing. She is past President of the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses and Immediate Past Chair of the Rehabilitation Research Foundation for the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses. She represents the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses on the Consortium for Spinal Cord Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines.

Dr. Nelson has over 25 referred publications and numerous books and book chapters published. In the past year she was the editor of a book titled, “Core Curriculum for Spinal Cord Injury Nurses.” Last year, she led a national VA Task Force that produced a training program and videotape on Safe Patient Handling.

Associate Director: Clinical Care and Innovations

Patricia A. Quigley, PhD, MPH, ARNP, CRRN

Education

Dr. Quigley has a BS in Nursing from the University of South Florida in 1975, a MS in Nursing from the University of South Florida in 1982, and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Florida in 1992.

Employment

Dr. Quigley has 23 years of experience in rehabilitation nursing. As a clinical nurse specialist she is responsible for program development and evaluation (in-patient and out-patient) in comprehensive rehabilitation, staff development programs, rehabilitation clinical pathways, functional assessment initiatives, and innovations in patient care delivery systems to meet standards for the Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

Research

Dr. Quigley’s research interests are in patient outcomes, nurse satisfaction, staffing methods, and program evaluation. Currently she is a member of the Research Utilization Group: Ergonomic Analysis of At-Risk Tasks for Nurses Providing Patient Care to SCI and Nursing home Care Unit Veterans. She collaborates with nationally known experts and the American Nurses Association in the area of Nurse staffing and patient outcomes. Dr. Quigley recently completed a pilot study at the James A. Haley VA to evaluate the feasibility of data collection to track nurse staffing patterns and nurse sensitive outcomes in acute care settings. Dr. Quigley has been the investigator or co-investigator in rehabilitation research funded by the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses, Sigma Theta Tau, and BARD, Inc.

Professional Involvement

Dr. Quigley is nationally known in rehabilitation nursing through her involvement in national organizations. She is currently involved in the American Nurses Association Quality Initiative Project through the Florida Nurses Association as Delegate to ANA Convention. Dr. Quigley is a faculty for undergraduate and graduate students in rehabilitation nursing, and a member of many local and national Department of Veterans Affairs Task Forces.

Associate Director: Technology Innovations

John D. Lloyd, PhD, MErgS, DPS, CPE

Education

Dr.. Lloyd holds a B.Sc.(Hons) and a PhD in Ergonomics from Loughborough University in England.

Current Employment

Dr. Lloyd is co-director of the Biomechanics Research Laboratory at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa, where he conducts contemporary research focusing on the prevention of cumulative trauma disorders in healthcare through the qualification and quantification of biomechanical stressors. He also holds an Adjunct appointment as Research Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida’s Center for Product Ergonomics.

Experience

Dr. Lloyd has practiced ergonomics internationally for the past eleven years, during which time he has provided workplace ergonomics consulting services to several Fortune 500 companies, including Sony, Allied Signal, Pioneer, Honda, and US Surgical. Prior assignments include President of The Ergonomics Institute where he developed ergonomics programs for corporate clients; Ergonomics/Biomechanics Consultant at Biomechanics Corporation of America; Research Ergonomist at Liberty Mutual Research Center where experiments were performed to determine safe operating levels for hand-intensive industrial tasks; and Human Reliability Consultant at RM Consultants, Ltd. John consults in the areas of ergonomics/human factors, biomechanics, industrial design, occupational safety and health, and product design and evaluation. He is frequently called upon to serve as an expert witness in the area of workplace ergonomics and safety.

Professional Activities

John has received the distinctions of Certified Professional Ergonomist (#725), and is a member of the Ergonomics Society’s professional register. Other memberships include the International Ergonomics Association, Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, in addition active involvement with HFES Consumer Product Ergonomics, Educators Professional, Industrial Ergonomics and Forensic Professionals task groups.

Research and Publications

Dr. Lloyd has authored to co-authored more than 70 book chapters, publications, open-literature articles and corporate technical reports. He has presented and lectured to professional and student audiences in the U.S. and internationally. Professionally, he is best known for his expertise with biomechanically-based ergonomics data acquisition technologies and contemporary research into the etiological mechanism and prevention of carpal tunnel syndrome. Dr. Lloyd is co-investigator on a research team that has had three funded VA projects related to safety. His collaborations with Drs. Nelson and Gross have resulted in four funded projects (Institute of Aging, Rehabilitation Research and Development, Health Services Research and a publication that received “Article of the Year” award.

Associate Director: Knowledge Transfer

Gail Powell-Cope, PhD, ARNP, FAAN

Education

Dr. Powell-Cope has a BSN in Nursing from the University of Florida in 1979, an MSN in Adult Health Nursing from the University of Florida in 1984, and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Washington in 1992.

Employment

Dr. Powell-Cope has over 21 years of nursing experience. Her areas of specialization include advanced practice adult health nursing, adults and families infected with and affected by HIV infection, evidence-based practice, health services research, and Gulf War illness.

At the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa she is the Associate Chief of Nursing Services for Research (ACNSR), Associate Director of the VISN 8 Evidence-Based Practice Implementation Center, and Associate Director for the Innovation Diffusion Division of the VISN 8 Patient Safety Center of Inquiry.

Research

Dr. Powell-Cope has a wide array of research in the areas of HIV infection. She has also done research in the area of implementation of evidence-based practice. Her studies have been funded by VA HSR&D, Roche Pharmaceuticals, Glaxo-Wellcome, The Division of Sponsored Research (University of South Florida, Tampa); National Center for Nursing Research, Department of Health and Human Services (Division of Nursing), and Sigma Theta Tau.

Dr. Powell-Cope is a reviewer for Science and Medicine and Public Health Nursing. She is also a member of the VISN 8 HSR&D Program Advisory Panel, the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital Nursing Research Committee, and the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital Research and Development Committee.

Professional Involvement

In addition to her involvement at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, Dr. Powell-Cope is also a Courtesy Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida (Tampa) College of Nursing and Chair of the Tampa AIDS Network Government Affairs Committee.
