Intensive Weight Reduction Group
Smoking Cessation Clinic
Learn about the benefits of quitting smoking. This class includes:
- Information about the hazards of smoking and the benefits of quitting.
- The difference between physical addiction and psychological dependence on nicotine.
- Information about choosing a quitting method that works for you.
- Ways to handle cravings and other withdrawal symptoms.
- Techniques to relieve stress.
- Ways to avoid weight gain.
- Techniques for preventing relapse.

Caregiver Support Group
This class is for those who are caring for a loved one with a physical or mental disability. Learn about ways you can help yourself while helping the other person.

Mini Weightloss Series
This series consists of weekly classes for 4 weeks and covers topics on weight management:
- Week 1 - Nutrition and weight management
- Week 2 - Medical risks of obesity
- Week 3 - Exercise and weight management
- Week 4 - Behavior change and relapse prevention
Classes are usually held during January, March, May, August, and October.

Back To Basics Class
Learn about the anatomy of the back, common back disorders, proper posture, body mechanics, and prevention of further back problems.
Veterans, caregivers, and employees with complaints of back or neck pain are welcome to this class.
Walk-ins accepted. Consult are preferred. Send consults to "RMS Physical Therapy OP".

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Ex-POW Therapy Group
This group is for ex-POWs with a diagnosis or symptoms of PTSD. Members can learn effective coping and talk about their past traumas in a comfortable environment.
Symptoms of PTSD: re-experiencing past war traumas (e.g., nightmares), avoidance of activities/situations reminding them of these traumas, and problems with heightened arousal (e.g., irritability, sleep difficulties, or problems with concentration).

Ex-POW Support Group
Led by ex-POW coordinator, this group provides a supportive environment for former prisoners of war. It consists of weekly presentations by speakers on medical and social issues of interest to ex-POWs.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
Open to everyone with a desire to deal with their alcohol problem and to those interested in learning more about AA.

Cardiac Rehab
This is a 12 session series that covers many topics important for the self-management of heart disease. Topics covered include: heart disease and risk factor reduction, exercise and good nutrition, medications, and stress management and weight management. The series also includes a grocery store scavenger hunt and microwave cooking demonstration.

BMI Fitness: Basics of Weight Reduction
This class offers a brief description of diet and exercise and how they affect Body Mass Index (BMI). Ways to decrease BMI with appropriate diet and exercise are covered.
Walk-ins are not accepted. A consult from Primary Care Provider is needed.
Patients may self refer after their BMI is assessed by a primary care nurse.

Diabetes Self-Management Education Program
The James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital’s diabetes program has been awarded Recognition by the American Diabetes Association in accordance with the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs.

Learn how to use your meter to test blood sugar.
Diabetes Education Class
Everything you wanted to know about diabetes: causes, treatments, complications, meal planning, exercise, stress management, and more.

Anxiety Disorder Group
This is a group for veterans diagnosed with anxiety disorders. It is a 12-week cognitive behavioral, psychoeducational group that incorporates relaxation methods and concept of personal wellness in the treatment of anxiety disorders.
Mental Health Clinic - 1BS - Thursdays at 1:30 pm
No walk-ins. All participants need a consult and must be in treatment and have a primary therapist and/or psychiatrists who will follow the participant after the conclusion of the group or be referred to the Mental Health Clinic by their primary care provider.

Anger Management Group
This is a 15-week cognitive behavioral group for veterans or staff who have problems managing their anger in an effective manner. This program is not intended to treat domestic violence perpetrators.
The approach is part didactic and part group process. Participants are given homework that is practical and involves " real life" situations.
Participants need to be free of psychotic symptoms. No one will be permitted to participate in any session under the influence of alcohol or other substances.
Mental Health Clinic: 1 BS - Wednesdays at 11 am or Thursdays at 1 pm
All participants need an intake/orientation session prior to admission to the group. Send a consult to the Mental Health Clinic.

Bipolar Class and Group
This is a series of 6 psychoeducational group classes for individuals with bipolar mood disorder. The purpose is to teach individuals about their illness and how to manage the symptoms of the illness so they can maintain quality of life and remain productive. The classes are small and there is time for discussion and sharing experiences. Patients who complete all classes may join the Bipolar Support Group.
Referrals are accepted via consult sent by health care provider.
Patient must be in treatment in one of the James A. Haley’s mental health programs.
Patients must be free of alcohol and illegal drugs. Prescribed medications are expected.

Pain Program Basic Nutrition Class
Class covers the basics of healthy eating with an emphasis on pain relief and is open to patients admitted to the Pain Rehabilitation Program.

Intensive Weight Reduction Group
This is an intensive 10-week class consisting of a weekly support group and a 1 hour group discussion on a variety of topics related to weight reduction.
Members weigh in each week and take supervised walks (if cleared by their Primary Care provider).
Walk-ins not accepted. A consult from Primary Care Provider is needed.
Patients who have completed the Mini Weightloss Series are also invited to attend.
Screening: Special Clinics - Mondays - 9:45 am to 10:45 am.
Group Sessions: Special Clinics - Mondays -10:45 am to 12:00 noon
Support group: 1C -104 - Mondays - 9:45 am to 10:45 am.
